Pendant lights do more work than almost any other fitting in the house. Hang one over a kitchen island or dining table and it becomes the focal point of the room, whether you planned it that way or not. That’s why it’s worth thinking through a few things before you buy.
At Harbor Lights, we’re excited to be adding a wide range of new lights to our display, including some unique looking pendant lights.
But, choosing pendant lighting isn’t just about appearance, so we’ve put together this short guide to help you choose the right pendant lights for your Fleurieu property.
Consider the following:
The scale of the space
A pendant that looks fine online can suddenly feel tiny — or enormous — once it’s hanging in your kitchen. As a rough guide, choose a shade (or cluster) that covers roughly a third to half the length of the table or island below.
Hanging height
Over a table or island bench, the bottom of the pendant typically sits 75 to 90 centimetres above the surface — low enough for atmosphere, high enough that nobody’s ducking. Ceiling height changes this, so check before committing to a fixed drop.
How much light it actually throws
Some pendants are designed purely for ambience, with a soft glow that won’t help much with chopping vegetables. Others use open or upward-facing shades that spread light more generously. Think about what the space needs to do before choosing a shape purely on looks.
Warm or cool pendant lights
Warm white (around 2700–3000K) suits most living and dining spaces and feels relaxed, particularly in a coastal home. Cool white can work in a functional kitchen zone, but it’s worth testing both, since photos rarely show the difference accurately.
Finish and material
Brushed brass, matte black, woven rattan, glass — the finish should tie in with your tapware, cabinetry hardware and other lighting, rather than being chosen in isolation. It’s one of the easiest ways to make a new pendant look like it always belonged.
Coastal durability
Salt air is hard on cheaper metal finishes. If your pendant will hang near an open window or an alfresco area, look for coastal-rated finishes built to resist corrosion — it makes a real difference in a couple of years.
Single pendant or a cluster of pendant lights?
One statement pendant suits a round table or small bench, but longer islands often look better with two or three matching pendants spaced evenly along the length — roughly 60 to 90 centimetres apart, depending on shade size.
Cord or rod, and how adjustable it is
Some pendants have a fixed drop, others an adjustable cord or rod that can be trimmed or extended on installation. If you’re not certain of your ceiling height, an adjustable option gives you room to fine-tune later.
Dimmability
A pendant that can be dimmed gives far more flexibility — bright for cooking, low and warm for dinner. It’s a small addition at installation stage that changes how a room feels from morning to evening.
Seeing it switched on before you buy
Photos rarely capture how pendant lights actually look once they’re lit — the warmth of the glow, the way the shade filters light, the true scale in a room. Seeing a fitting switched on in person takes most of the guesswork out, which is why our showroom keeps pendants mounted and running rather than sitting on a shelf.
Choosing a pendant light is a small decision with a surprisingly large effect on how a room feels. Whether you’re planning a kitchen renovation or a holiday home refresh, the team at Harbor Lights is always happy to talk through what will work for your space.
